At Cheal Associates Limited, we understand that legal costs are an important consideration when seeking advice or representation. We are committed to transparency and ensuring our clients have clear information about the costs involved in employment law matters. Below, we provide details on our pricing structure for common employment-related services, in line with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Transparency Rules.

Pricing for Employment Law Services

  1. Settlement Agreements

If you have been offered a settlement agreement by your employer, we can provide independent legal advice on the terms.

  • Fixed Fee (Employer Contribution): Most employers contribute towards legal fees, and in many cases, this will cover our costs in full.  Indeed we seek to limit our fees to that wherever possible.
  • Typical Fee Range: £350 – £750 + VAT (depending on complexity).
  • Additional Costs: If negotiations are required, further charges may apply at our hourly rates (detailed below).  These will however be discussed with you.
  1. Unfair Dismissal & Discrimination Claims

If you are bringing or defending a claim before an Employment Tribunal, costs will depend on the complexity of the case. Below is an indicative guide but we are happy to discuss estimates with you before you embark upon a claim:

Case Complexity Estimated Cost (excluding VAT) Factors Affecting Cost
Simple Case £5,000 – £8,000 Straightforward unfair dismissal claim with limited witnesses/evidence.
Medium Complexity £8,000 – £12,000 Claims involving discrimination, whistleblowing, or more substantial evidence.
High Complexity £12,000 – £25,000+ Complex legal issues, multiple claimants/respondents, or lengthy hearings.
  • Tribunal Representation: Barristers’ fees for representation at hearings typically range from £1,500 – £5,000 per day (plus VAT), depending on seniority.  Some junior barristers have lower rates which may not be subject to VAT.
  • Disbursements: These may include expert reports, court fees (if applicable), and travel expenses.
  1. Redundancy Advice & Contract Reviews
  • Redundancy Consultation: £300 – £1,500 + VAT (depending on complexity).
  • Employment Contract Review: £250 – £1,000 + VAT (depending on complexity).

Hourly Rates

For cases that are not fixed-fee, we charge on an hourly basis.  Our rates are £197 + VAT per hour.  You will receive terms of business at the commencement of all cases which sets out our breakdown of those fees.

Funding Options

We offer flexible funding arrangements, including:

  • Legal Expenses Insurance: You may have cover through your home or employment insurance policy.
  • Fixed Fees & Payment Plans: Available for specific services.

Timescales

Employment disputes can take anything from 1 week to 6 months to resolve, depending on their complexity. Tribunal cases may take longer, particularly if hearings are delayed, due to the Tribunal’s listing of hearings. We will provide realistic timescales based on your case and the Court or Tribunal in which it is brought.
